Der Biologe und Biochemiker war bis zu seinem Ruhestand Leiter des Molekularbiologischen Zentrums an der Bundesanstalt für Ernährung in Karlsruhe (heute Max-Rubner Institut – MRI). Er ist Vorsitzender des Wissenschaftskreis Genomik und Gentechnik e.V. (WGG).
Keywords/Schwerpunkte: Gen- und Biotechnik bei Pflanzen und Mikroorganismen, Lebensmittelsicherheit / Sicherheitsbewertung, Nachweisverfahren, gesetzliche Regelung zur Gentechnik und neuen molekularen Techniken
